the subtle bodies seriespresented by adam overton and friends, wherever and whenever
the subtle bodies series is a sporadic investigation involving artists, performers, choreographers, and sound artists working to facilitate subtle, barely-noticed experiments in sound, movement, action, and energy within public spaces. Ranging from performances and workshops to activities and rumors, these subtle occurrences are lightly announced, barely present, and open to any who might care to notice or participate. The series invites those involved to explore more fully the range of motion to which we're entitled in the various public spaces and governed environments we regularly inhabit, while striving to live in peaceful parallel with the everyday activity of our surroundings.

Update (2/2010): the subtle bodies series is currently expanding out of the institutional framework of the Machine Project residency at the Hammer, into the various environments we inhabit every day in Los Angeles and beyond. We plan to continue exploring the range of freedoms we have to act spontaneously, creatively, and peacefully as subtle visitors, wherever we are. Stay tuned for more in this series...

presented as part of Machine Project Summer Jubilee
Machine Project is visiting the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis during the last two weeks of July, and are taking with them a stack of Invisible & Subtle Performance Pamphlets! The pamphlet contains over 25 subtle pieces – actions, activities, and thoughts – that can be performed, mostly invisibly, while observing the exhibitions currently on display.
Hardcopies of the pamphlet can be collected at the reception desk while visiting the Walker. Meanwhile, download and view a pdf of the pamphlet here!
Special thanks to Sarah Schultz & Scott Stulen of the Walker, and to Machine Project!

where: Silverlake Jubilee [meet at the corner of Gateway and Myra, under the big tree]
A dérive is a walk with no destination, or with infinite destinations. When on a dérive, you let yourself be guided by curiosity, and then the enchantment begins. Adam Overton and Lailye Weidman have been collaborating on magical walks in LA for three years, adapting improvisation, somatic and composition practices for busy city streets and overgrown alleyways. Come dérive at the Silverlake Jubilee on Saturday May 21!
here's today's menu of dérives! -> Jubilee Dérives [pdf]
For each dérive, meet us at the northwest corner of Myra and Gateway, under the big tree at one or more of the times listed below.
3pm—30 min dérive
There will also be pamphlets available with a set of dérives that you can do on your own time.

performers: Eliot Eidelman
At specific date and time in 2011 that cannot yet be revealed, Eliot Eidelman will be performing for 1 hour as part of the subtle bodies series. A random date was recently selected (an expiration date from a water bottle), and between now and then Eliot will try to forget when he's supposed to perform. The date will not be publicly announced until afterward to ensure that he's not reminded. As soon this time has passed, he will be immediately contacted in order to find out what he was doing during the prescribed performance-hour, and his actions during that time will constitute his performance. Stay tuned for further details.

At the invitation of Mathew Timmons, Adam Overton subtly performed a program of partial pieces in tandem with Timmons' CREDIT launch and artist talk at Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions in Hollywood. The performed works were truncated in accordance with the performance overlay, Percentage Piece (for Elana Mann), using several ratios calculated between pieces (% of cash from a few days ago still in my wallet ... % of time spent thinking about sex in the last 24hrs ... % of protein Steven van Dyck consumes per meal ... % of time awake/asleep in the last 24hrs ... etc).

The Viewer
Paul Pescador
As part of the subtle bodies series, Paul Pescador will hire an actor to sit on a bench in the Norton Simon museum from the time the museum opens till it closes. The actor will sit quietly and stare at the painting in front of them and will not get up from his/her seat unless to use the restroom or quickly eat. By forcing someone to sit with an art object for an extended period of time, The Viewer attempts to understand the relationship the viewer can have with an artwork.

Others are welcome to join or try this dialogue whenever they can get to the museum. Feedback is welcome from these experiences.
