Earth is part two in the element series conceived and curated by Kirstin Mitchell. Like Water, Earth will take place in an alternative space and will include other artists for a multimedia event.
Artists include Will Eccleston, Adam Overton, Hazeus, Wade Thompson, and Ian Ingram. The variety of work includes video, Kinetic sculpture, painting, installation, graffiti, audioscape, and graphic design.
299 Peters Street is a raw space chosen for its' earthly smell and look. It is part of the story, with pre-Civil war stone and decaying structure some of the truest relation between man and earth reveal themselves. Artworks revolve around the space and act and react to the character.
Kirstin Mitchell plays with the "four wall theory" with a hanging fabric structure representing home and the spiritual desire to ascend from earthly aesthetic restraints. Mitchell's paintings show the rising and falling horizon line as represented through a lifetime of encounters with silhouettes of loved ones and acquaintances.
Will Eccleston chooses to express the direct human relation to soil and does so in grand scale with a mechanical sculpture of a 4' hand.
Adam Overton has created a "sonic dialogue between the earth and the feet that tread upon it." Overton has provided an interactive sound installation that represents through metallic sound the creative and destructive relationship with earth.
Ian Ingram uses the lower space to install his 8' fetus, which brings the concept of life and birth as well as rebirth into the spectrum. Ingram's video explores true footage of earth and the cycles of nature from a voyeur's point of view.
Wade Thompson has created the flyer and includes four painterly drawings. Two are linguistic puns, and two are possibilities for the show. Thompson opts to show the creative process as it is raw and still in motion rather than the idea of a "final" product.
Hazeus invites the viewer into the space with the rawness of city life by representing earth as a primitive yet urban dance through graffiti.
Opening night is July 27th & the final night is August 3rd. Show will be open upon request between events.
