THE ELECTRIC ARTS ALLIANCE OF ATLANTA PRESENTS

Performances by Maria Blondeel and DropBox

At Eyedrum, Thursday, December 5, 2002, 8 pm

The Electric Arts Alliance of Atlanta (EAAA) is proud to present Electric Artists Maria Blondeel and DropBox in performance at Eyedrum on Thursday, December 5th at 8 pm. Maria Blondeel is an intermedia artist from Belgium and will be presenting her sound piece, HH, which generates its sound material by using the patterns of light as it shines into a car driving through Hamburg, Germany. Ms. Blondeel is coming to Atlanta with the aid of the Atlanta College of Art and the Flemish Cultural Department. Michael DeMurga and Matthew Roberts make up the Florida new media collaborative, DropBox, and will be performing Alpha Disco Beta: Godard Remix, a sound and video remix of the Godard film, Alphaville. This will be the final event of the month-long Atlanta Electric Arts Festival 2002 hosted by the EAAA.

Blondeel on her piece, HH: “The audio tracks were recorded in Hamburg during August 2001. The recording is a transposition of the light in the city. The tones you hear were produced by an electronic sound generator that was installed in a car. The sound generator transposed the lights, as measured by 6 sensors, into high and low pitched square waves. The sensors where attached to the windows of the car. The pitch and intensity of the sound changed in 'real time' to the light according to the traffic situation. I drove through Hamburg on various times, during the day and at night. I followed different routes while recording the light, whether sun light or artificial light. You hear a mix of high and low pitched square waves recorded in different light areas of Hamburg. You can hear the sun at noon on the Köhlbrandbrücke and the full moon at night. The electronic sound blends with simultaneous recorded ambient sounds.”

DropBox "flattens" Godard's film "Alphaville" (1965) into a database containing every scene, line of dialogue, sound effect and measure of the orchestral score. This material is cataloged according to character, location and general morphology. A 45-minute real-time performance/remix is realized solely using this database. Their live performance represents an alternate, spontaneously improvised, non-narrative interface to Godard's original work reproduced as a film. DropBox uses a primary improvisational tool--the remix--with software of their own design and blends elements in the database with an abstract formal logic, rather than pursuing a narrative drive. The duo cuts and pastes, overlaps and overlays, compresses and expands, filters, re-sequences and links data into new musical/visual formations.
