sub:marine night at the 10High

Larvae, Magicicada, and J.Smiley

Monday, November 11, 2002, 9 pm

sub:marine records will host a night of live electronic music performance at the 10High on Monday, November 11th from 9 PM to Midnight.  This performance is part of of the Atlanta Electric Arts Festival 2002, hosted by the Electric Arts Alliance of Atlanta.  Scheduled to perform are:

LARVAE

Larvae is the duo of Matthew Jeanes (formerly of Underwater) and Chris Burnett.  Mixing paranoid ambience with harsh breakbeats and throbbing low end, Larvae work with themes of alienation and isolation to create claustrophobic portraits of a post-digital age.  They have released tracks on compilations by the Hed Nod and Lifeformproject labels and have wcontributed a song to an upcoming release from Texas-based Ethedrone Muzak.  In addition to traditional musical recordings, LARVAE also plan and stage site-specific mixed media installations.

Magicicada

sub:marine records has just released the debut album by electro-acoustic musician Christopher White.  His Magicicada project is one where acoustic instruments and field recordings collide with digital processing and looping effects to create deeply resonant psychological spaces.  Magicicada’s debut album, Putting Out Fires Unfinished is a tension-filled epic that contracts and releases over time, and is even more engrossing to experience live.

J.Smiley

Jonathan Smiley is one of a growing number of circuit-benders – people who dissect and resolder children’s toys to create sounds that the manufacturers never intended or indeed imagined.  Smiley is a joy to watch, as he coaxes squelches and pitch-stretched voices out of hacked Furbies and toy keyboards, but what sets him apart is that he brings a musical ear to the mix, and uses the toys along with programmed beats and synths to create genuinely enjoyable and certifiably strange music.

sub:marine records

sub:marine records was established in 2000 to release independent works of technology-infused music by artists who are working in the margins of pop culture.  To date, the Atlanta-based label has released over a dozen original albums, EPs, and singles both on traditional media such as CDs and vinyl records and on their website, www.submarinerecords.com.  The current label roster includes Audombil, Miles Tilmann, LARVAE, J.Smiley, and Magicicada, with an upcoming 7” release from Tilmann and LARVAE planned for December.
