Los Angeles, CA, June 1, 2007 - Quiet innocence, spiritual sound art, and avant garde masters of traditional instruments. That's what we have in store for you this week in our "Is It Music?" series at Dangerous Curve. (Is it music? Yes, it is. It all is.) Come on down to our no-fuss, no-muss "music room," where you can hear some great music you can sink your teeth into, and then actually talk to the musicians afterwards! Feel good, but keep the bite.
The evening of Thursday, June 14, 2007, starting at 8:00 p.m., we will again present the delightful duo ing http://myspace.com/ingtree and their secret TBA co-act. They will be doing quiet music.
The evening of Friday, June 15, 2007, starting at 8:00 p.m., we will present Seattle's sound and visual artist Jason E. Anderson/JEA http://www.pathoftheelk.com, http://www.makejetsilent.com, and Los Angeles' sound and intermedia artist yek koo http://www.helgafassonaki.net.
The afternoon of Sunday, June 17, 2007, starting at 4:00 p.m., we will have two trios: one http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=25533 of Emily Hay http://www.emilyhay.com, Brad Dutz http://braddutz.com, and (tentatively) Wayne Peet http://www.pfmentum.com/wayne_peet_als.html and one of Anthony Shadduck http://www.myspace.com/jazzfreedom, Lynn Johnston (clarinets), Tom McNally http://www.myspace.com/tommcnalley, http://www.tommcnalley.com.
As always, beverages will be served, and most of the times, a great art show will be up.
We're located two miles from Chinatown, at 1020 East Fourth Place, between Molino and Mateo Streets, in the back of the 500 Molino Street Lofts, #102, between the Fourth Street Bridge's (on the LA River side of downtown) two on/off ramps. See our website http://dangerouscurve.org for directions, pictures, and updates.
More about the Musicians/Artists
ing http://myspace.com/ingtree, www.ingismaxandjohn.com are Max Markowitz and John Wood. Innocence abounds with these two truly evolved spirits. They raise yours by putting you at the doorstep of the gods. The Golden Years never left these guys, even though they went to Cal Arts. They just ended a stint with their Origins of the Rainbow series at Machine Project http://www.machineproject.com/past.
Jason E Anderson is a sound and visual artist from Seattle whose work includes live performances, recorded sound works, sound installations, graphic art, collage, and video. His recorded work and live performances are both logical and intuitive approaches to music improvisation and experimentation. He uses electronically generated, processed, and natural sound within the more abstract realm of electronic music---both noise and musique concrete. Anderson uses both analog and digital electronics. He generates sounds and plays them back, mixing and manipulating in a gestural fashion. This give him an unlimited palette and allows him to use field recordings. In 2005, he founded the label make jet silent (MJS). He organizes for No West and produces the Quiet sound series and 12 Hour Play. He is currently working on a solo recording series called "Intention (a trilogy)," and is creating a multidisciplinary art project "Path of the Elk."
yek koo ("one mountain" in Farsi) is Helga R. Fassonakis' http://helgafassonaki.net recent solo project. One thing---one flat tire, one wrong turn, one rainfall, one lost number, etc.---can alter the course of something drastically, hence the name. Her compositions "may already begin as broken or eradicated sounds that then collapse into heavy drones." She uses santurs (Persian dulcimers, which she hammers her own special way), sitars, electronic tape/growth machines, prepared laptops, ebows, children's toys, and melodicum. She's manipulated tape machines, sound-generating wind turbines, and noise to reveal the sonorous qualities of "otherwise commonplace sounds," allowing outside sounds and the audience to change the course of the performance. Helga Fassonaki is a sound and intermedia artist, born in Southern California who works with sound, performance, film/video installation, and interactive art. She has a BA from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis O!
bispo and an MFA from the University of Auckland, New Zealand. She's been in Auckland's Alleluya Noise and Transacoustic Festival and Long Beach's Soundwalk. In 2004, she won first prize in Exposure04, a postgraduate research competition, with an interactive sound presentation, "[hafez] tracing." She's used contact mics to reveal the internal vibrations and glitches of electronics. She and New Zealand experimental musician Andrew Scott had a collaboration Metal Rouge, where they passed (mixed/cut/layered/recorded) audiotapes back and forth along the Pacific Ocean. She recently returned to LA, "bringing with her a handbag of noisy transpositions."
Emily Hay (flutes and vocals) http://www.emilyhay.com/vita.html is a flutist, vocalist and pianist who pushes her instruments to their limits. She has the chops of contemporary classical technique and the spontaneity for free improvisation. She augments her unusual tone colors with electronic manipulation. Her vocalizations range from primal to operatic, adding some intellectual scat. She has played with avant garde, alternative art rock, free improvisation, electro-acoustical, and contemporary classical ensembles such as U Totem, The Motor Totemist Guild, The 5 UU's, Otherparts, I Am Umbrella, Adam Rudolph's Go Organic Orchestra, The Emily Hay Collective, The Rich West Ensemble, The Jeff Kaiser Okodektet, and The Vinny Golia Large Ensemble. She is a featured artist numerous record labels and performed extensively internationally. She co-hosts the alternative college music radio program "Trilogy" on KXLU 88.9FM Los Angeles www.kxlu.com. She is the former Music Program !
Director for the Beyond Baroque Foundation, with a BFA in music from Bard College and an MFA in music from California Institute of the Arts.
Brad Dutz (percussion) http://braddutz.com plays many instruments: congas, berimbau, bata, bodhran, bones, pandiero, djembe, tabla, kanjira, doumbec, riq, and others. He studied at Berklee School of Music and toured the country with Maynard Ferguson. He has 10 solo CDs, has co-produced 12 others and played as a sideman for 210 titles. He tries to bring the strangest percussion instruments he has to recording sessions. He has recorded CDs for artists Alanis Morrisette, KISS, Willie Nelson, Michael Wolff, Tribal Tech, David Benoit, Rick Braun, Vinny Golia, Lee Ann Ryhmes, Mitch Forman, Terence Trent Darby, Rickie Lee Jones, and Handsonsemble, plus actors Jeff Bridges and Ronny Cox. He can be heard on numerous TV shows and in several IMAX films. A part-time faculty member at Cal State Long Beach, he's written three books on percussion. In 2002, his Obliteration quartet was the subject of a documentary film. We always welcome him, along with any of the multifarious groups !
to which he belongs.
Wayne Peet http://www.pfmentum.com/wayne_peet_als.html is known as the guy who is known by those who know whom he is, if you're still with us. We love it when he brings in his mighty Hammond, with which he creates his famous turbulence.
Anthony Shadduck http://www.myspace.com/jazzfreedom is a contrabassist currently living in Long Beach. He has recently completed his Master of Music in Jazz Studies and Performance from California State University Long Beach. Active in the both standard jazz and the free improvised idiom, he has performed and recorded with such L.A.-based musicians as bass clarinetist and composer Lynn Johnston, sound artist/guitarist Chris Schlarb and the Create! Collective, Joe Biaza and the Universal Congress Of, singer/flutist Emily Hay, trumpeter Ron Stout, drummer Ches Smith of Good for Cows, as well as guitarist Nels Cline of Wilco. Shadduck's own trio and quartet performs original compositions, plus the early music of Ornette Coleman.
Lynn Johnston (clarinets). Ken Waxman says of Johnston: "One Kingdom comer who makes the most noise in a good way is baritone saxophonist Lynn Johnston. Someone who has been featured in Jeff Kaiser Ockodektet, he usually eschews the swollen horns bottom end for multiphonic and altissimo attacks which raise the level of the others responses." LA Weekly says of him (in a July 25, 2002 Amoeba Music performance with Heather Lockie, Rick Potts, Rich West, Nels Cline, Michael Intriere): "...Lynn's alto solos were strong, jerkily rhythmed pieces of Archie Sheppian honk 'n' squawk; he turned purple twice..."
Tom McNally http://www.myspace.com/tommcnalley, http://www.tommcnalley.com is a guitarist recently relocated to Los Angeles. He has been recognized as a major force on the creative music scene, working as both a sideman and a leader. He has performed (and can be seen) with a wide variety of musicians, including Rob Blakeslee, Michael Vlatkovich, Rich Halley, Nels Cline, Bert Turetzky, Mark Dresser, Jeff Kaiser, Alex Cline, Bert Wilson, Adam Diller, Tad Weed, John Stowell, John Gross, Jason Mears, and John Zorn, as well as with his own groups.

Please adopt animals from local animal care facilities, rescue groups, and shelters rather than purchasing them from breeders or pet stores, and have your companion animals spayed or neutered.
Did you know that if everyone in LA who already has a cat adopted just one shelter cat around every 15 years, not one would have to die? Look on http://laanimalservices.com/adoptsearchphotos.htm to choose one of them today!
