Psycho represents questions of corporality, seeing and being seen and
the personal and social constructions which frame our bodies and our
sight. In this formative work of Cypis’ career exploring
subjectivity and social relations, identity, configured by cultural
histories, becomes re-configured through the body as the repository
of experience, memory, dream, fantasy and desire.
Dorit Cypis’ education as an artist at the Nova Scotia College of
Art and Design 1972-75, and at the California Institute of the Arts
1975-77, were informed equally by feminism, conceptual art and the
questioning of representational forms. Her work moved seamlessly
between photography, performance, cinema, and sculpture. In 1983
Cypis developed a strategy using multiple, overlapping slide
projections to be interrupted by a moving body called “open spiral
animation” that bridged live performance, cinema and photography.

color c print
David Askevold, a resident of Nova Scotia, Canada, will be
represented by a selection of photographic work from the 1970’s.
Askevold is a pioneer of using narrative text and photographs in
conceptual structures to represent possible scenarios located
somewhere between dream, fantasy and memory, riding a thin line
between interiority and social reality.
Askevold was a teacher at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design
during that institution’s formative years between 1968-1974. He is a
frequent visitor to Los Angeles, and has taught both at California
Institute for the Arts and at Pasadena Art Center.
