Los Angeles, CA, December 1, 2007 - The duo ing considers themselves primarily a music act, but a lot of the times, they can't resist the urge add a little performance into the mix. When they last were here, it Max's father, the veteran performance artist Barry Markowitz, was in the audience. Put two genius performers together like that and you get. . .well, you should have been there. Let's put it this way: it was a cross between Candide and Tim Miller. Don't miss this time (Sunday). As for Saturday, Marnie Weber is super popular, so you want to get here early, even though we're opening up the rollup doors. Veteran musicians abound that night. Friday is going to be great, too, with some spirit-enhancing ambience surrounding you in our resonant "living" room. Come meet the performers and maybe get in on the act, too.
The evening of Friday, December 14, 2007, starting at 8:00 p.m., we will have two acts: Brian Smith http://www.myspace.com/briansmith2 and Sarah Ibrahim (voice and laptop).
The evening of Saturday, December 15, 2007, starting at 7:00 p.m., we will have http://Trakwerx's http://www.trakwerx.com/label.htm CD release party, with The 17th Pygmy http://www.myspace.com/17pygmies going on at 7:00 p.m. and The Spirit Girls http://www.myspace.com/thespiritgirls (with Marnie Weber http://www.marnieweber.com) going on at 8:00 p.m. See below for more information on the musicians.
The evening of Sunday, December 15, 2007, starting at 7:00 p.m., we will have Andre LaFosse http://www.altruistmusic.com, http://www.myspace.com/andrelafosse, ing http://myspace.com/ingtree, http://www.ingismaxandjohn.com, and special guests TBA. Max Markowitz, one of the duo ing, is our current exhibition artist. It's a great show and it is selling out! Even though it officially closes Saturday, the show will still be up Sunday.
As always, beverages will be served, and most of the times, a great art show will be up.
We're located two miles from Chinatown, at 1020 East Fourth Place, between Molino and Mateo Streets, in the back of the 500 Molino Street Lofts, #102, between the Fourth Street Bridge's (on the LA River side of Downtown) two on/off ramps. See our website http://dangerouscurve.org for directions, pictures, and updates.
More about the CD Release Party Musicians
Spirit Girls
Forever Free is the debut album by LAÕs favorite avant-rockers The Spirit Girls. The band has an interesting origin: it grew out of "The Spirit Girls: Songs that Never Die," a rock opera created by noted LA artist Marnie Weber. The opera follows a group of ghost girls on a fairytale-like journey as they search for a place to perform their songs and tell their stories. Forever Free chronicles the lives and deaths of the Spirit Girls through expressive, multi-dimensional vocals, powerful, melodic guitars, thick psychedelic synths, and mournful cello riffs. The Spirit Girls' sound has been described as something of a cross between Sonic Youth, King Crimson and 17th Century French Romantic paintings. After performing "Songs That Never Die" to sellout crowds, Marnie decided to expand her original concept into a separate, but unique, musical group. As an original member of LAÕs legendary Ô80s band The Party Boys, Marnie had little trouble recruiting the musicians she needed. Such!
notable musicians as Dani Tull (Polar Bear), Tamara Sussman (Bertha Mason and The Polio Kids), Tanya Haden (Silver Sun Pickups and the Haden Three) and Debbie Spinelli (Rad Waste, 17 Pygmies) all signed on as active members of the Spirit Girls. So the saga of this band of ghost girls continues, as they wander through a series of imaginary landscapes similar to those in the collages and films of Marnie Weber. With the renewed interest in '80s "post-punk" music, Forever Free plays well to today's "alternative" audience, while still appealing to the original punk set who still like to take a walk on the wild side.
The 17th Pygmy
Approximately eight months (from Groundhog Day to Halloween, to be exact) from their last release "13 Blackbirds" The 17th Pygmy have released "Ballade of Tristram's Last Harping," their second full-length CD in less than one year. This is a tad faster than their previous 17-year hiatus between releases. Formed in the mid-80s, the band was formerly (and perhaps will be again someday, you never know) known as 17 Pygmies. The seventeenth pygmy (Jaxon Del Rey) decided that The 17th Pygmy was a name, in that it better reflected the '60s Psychedelic-70s Classic Rock direction of the band's new recordings: think The 17th Floor Elevator or, perhaps, The Exploding Plastic Inevitable Pygmy. The band consists of Jaxon Del Rey (17 Pygmies, Savage Republic) and Jeff Brenneman (White Glove Test) on guitars, Meg Maryatt on classical guitar and doing vocals, Tony Davis (Swivelneck and White Glove Test) on bass, and Dirk Doucette (White Glove Test) on drums. The 17th Pygmy's members ha!
ve combined their unique talents to create a musical tribute to the style and inventiveness of some of their favorite music, namely, '60s Psychedelia and '70s Classic Rock. Phil Spector, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, the Kinks, The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, Neil Young, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and (although somewhat out of the box but, to be honest) Nick Cave---the band just loves the guy---are all paid homage to in one way or another, as part and parcel of the musical pastiche that is "Ballade of TristramÕs Last Harping."
