ABOUT THE ARTIST

Working with photography, video, performance, installation and sculpture,
Kelly Nipper explores the dynamics between motion, space, body, and time in
relation to communication and technology. Nipper¹s work draws on science,
meteorology, and the experimental art, dance and theater practices of the
1940¹s through the 1960¹s‹particularly those of Merce Cunningham, Allan
Kaprow, and Rudolph von Laban. A frequent collaborator with dancers, she
often choreographs activities and movements to stage a series of exercises
that test existing systems. Nipper earned her MFA from CALARTS in 1995. In
2000, curator Paul Schimmel of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Los Angeles
selected Nipper to represent the U.S. in the Guarene Arte exhibition in
Turin, Italy. Nipper was awarded the 2004 Alberta Prize for Visual Art for
her Bending Water into a Heart Shape, a four channel video installation that
creates an interplay between the excruciatingly slowed-downed motion of a
skater doing a triple lutz with the melting of a mobile made of ice.
Nipper¹s work is included in the collections of the MuseRm of Contemporary
Art Los Angeles, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, The Israel Museum,
Jerusalem, and the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Turin, Italy. Her
work has been reviewed in Flash Art, Artforum, New Art Examiner, The Los
Angeles Times, and The San Francisco Examiner, and has been included in
publications such as Vitamin Ph: New Perspectives in Photography and Ice
Cream: Contemporary Art in Culture. Nipper will have a solo exhibition at
the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston, in the fall of 2007.
