Call for Proposals - Latino Community Arts Project in Santa Monica
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear adam,
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
18th Street Arts Center in Santa Monica is soliciting informal proposals
from Latino
artists, artists active in Latino-based art forms, and/or Santa
Monica-based artists
for a small-scale, community arts or arts education project in any medium
to take
place in the City of Santa Monica in 2008. 18th Street will be applying
to the
Santa Monica Cultural Affairs Division under its Latino Community Arts
Grant program
for funding for the selected project.
The City of Santa Monica's description of the program is as follows:
"The Latino Community Arts Program is designed to provide funding for
widespread
public access to Latino cultural programming. This category offers
support to
non-profit Latino and/or non-Latino arts, cultural, or community
organizations based
in Santa Monica to produce projects geared specifically to Santa Monica's
Latino
community. Applications that involve youth and those that have strong
educational
components are particularly encouraged.
(ALSO, FOR ARTS EDUCATION PROPOSALS): "Applicant must meet elements to
California
Visual and Performing Arts Content Standards if project is an arts
education program."
While there is no guarantee of funding, 18th Street has a successful track
record
of projects granted via this program, which include:
· A Day of the Dead mask-making workshop by artist Marcus Kuiland-Nazario
for both
at-risk youth in afterschool programs as well as the general public at
18th Street's
Artnight at 18th Street open house event;
· An exhibition of blackbook sketches by two dozen graffiti artists
curated by
artists Duke, Nuke, and Tempt, who also painted a new graffiti mural
outside 18th
Street's office and gallery;
· An exhibition of art, performance and artifacts from LA's underground
club culture,
featuring the works of numerous Latino artists and curated by artist Alex
Donis;
· Free arts education workshops in various media for local youth in Title
1 public
schools in the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District.
Production budgets for the project (including artist fees, materials,
marketing,
and other miscellaneous expenses) are in the $3000-$5000 range. If your
informal
proposal is selected, 18th Street will work with you on finalizing the
project proposal
details and budget accordingly.
18th Street Arts Center is Southern California's largest contemporary art
and artist
residency center, providing support to emerging to mid-career artists and
