Elana Mann and Adam Overton proudly present Conversation Pieces, a gallery installation and weeklong series of workshops February 13-17, 2006, at California Institute of the Arts in Gallery A402. Workshops will be presented from 5-7 pm Monday thru Thursday, and from Noon-1pm on Friday, and are geared toward exploring interpersonal communication within the conversational dimension. The week will first address the nature and limits of conversation, and will move then to consider alternative methods of verbal and non-verbal communication.
Throughout the week a variety of guest lecturers will present ideas and activities covering a number of topics. UCLA linguist and PhD candidate C. J. Koenig will delve into the world of conversational analysis; artist and mediator Dorit Cypis will tackle the notions of mediation and mirroring foreignness; artist and Calarts faculty member Sara Roberts will introduce the potentials of "group think" as achieved through Bohmian dialogue; multimedia artist Bita Sharif will explore tactile communication and healing via energy therapy; and health and lifestyle coach and graphic designer Paz Fernandez will help us to complete our communicative cycles and express our momentary selves through Dyad training.
In addition, each day Mann and Overton will kick off or end each exploration with brief presentations and activities that illustrate and promote conversational awareness. These will include the presentation of "fieldwork" produced by volunteers in the weeks leading up the event, interactive demonstrations of the possible uses of the gallery's sculptural "conversation enablers," an intimate Valentine's Day dance, and the publication of a collection of conversational performance texts.
Elana Mann is a 1st year MFA in Art at CalArts. Her work investigates notions of intimacy, bodily awareness and social interaction through a variety of means including sculpture, collage, performance, installation and curatorial projects. Adam Overton is a performance artist, composer, curator, and recent MFA graduate of the CalArts Music Department, and his body- and mind-based work is often an exploration of virtuosity, interiority, and invisible performance.
Please join us for an exciting week's worth of investigation into the realm of conversational awareness!!

STATEMENT
How to cross that divide, that gulf between me ... and you? Through words perhaps? Or maybe via mischievous grins. Is it understanding that I seek? A chance to be heard? Or is conversation just a way for me and you to burn off some steam, to wind down? Sure, this can be a great way for us to get to know each other better, yet is it simply our common tastes and similar diction that's helping pass the time so enjoyably? Or is it my manner of speaking, and your manner of listening, that draws us closer? We're getting closer, right? Is that the point? Is this another one of your performances, you ask? Well, now it is, but just then it wasn't - or was it? Well I don't think I was, but I'm not sure about you anymore. Are you thinking what I'm thinking? Can you ever? Is that what I even want? 'Tis poetry that unfurls between me and you, two personal poetries that only moments (or years?) ago were being mangled into a mess of words and gestures dripping from our minds down to our tongues and limbs... Know what I'm saying? I'm here ... you're here. Let's make the most of this: Let's dance, improvise and entertain. How else, how else? Is there anything we've missed, or anything you're not telling me? Have I said too much? Your turn...
