OTHER MINDS CELEBRATES 50 YEARS OF FLUXUS
with Alison Knowles, Yoshi Wada, Luciano Chessa, and Adam Overton
Other Minds presents a three-day series of events celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Fluxus, next Thursday through Saturday, September 15 through 17.

THURSDAY's film screenings will include footage of historical
performances by John Cage, George Maciunas, Dick Higgins, Ben Vautier, Philip Corner, and Alison Knowles, plus rarely-seen documentation of Nam June Paik's collaborations with Charlotte Mormon. Afterwards, Charles Amirkhanian will conduct a brief Q & A with the evening's film curator Peter Esmonde, Knowles and Fluxus scholar Hannah Higgins.

FRIDAY's special edition of "Music from Other Minds" includes Abschiedssymphonie, Op. 177 (1985) by Danish Fluxus artist Henning Christiansen, performed by Joseph Beuys, Nam June Paik and the composer.

SATURDAY's performance features Fluxus founding member Alison Knowles, new work by Yoshi Wada, and new realizations of works by Yoko Ono, George Brecht, Dick Higgins and La Monte Young with performers Luciano Chessa and Adam Overton. The evening begins with a "panel discussion" at 7pm (don't miss it!) and includes a Fluxus art exhibit and store in the lobby.

Inspired by John Cage's classes in experimental composition at the New School, Fluxus was first named and organized in 1961 by Lithuanian-born artist George Maciunas. Over the past 50 years the word Fluxus has represented both a group of artists and an artistic philosophy; its ethic of exploration, simplicity and absurdity has catalyzed a host of radical and untraditional forms including happenings, performance art, video art, mail art, and intermedia performance.

Fluxus works continue to prove that ideas are one thing and what happens is SOMETHING ELSE.

Something Else is presented at SOMArts Cultural Center as part of the Affordable Space Program, which is supported by the San Francisco Arts Commission.
