Sat 3/19, 15pm
artSpa presents
a Massage Basics Workshop for Artists
facilitated by Adam Overton
Artists, musicians and performers are encouraged to join us as we work to develop our therapeutic touching skills! Under the tutelage of a certified massage therapist, we will explore some simple strategies for the use of hands, fingers, forearms and elbows, and ultimately for listening through touch. Massage will occur while seated in folding chairs, with participants remaining completely clothed throughout, and won't involve any oils or extra equipment. Attending solo is totally fine, but if rubbing strangers or semi-strangers seems odd, feel free to bring a partner you trust.
Space is limited, so please rsvp at least a day in advance to a@plus1plus1plus.org
$10 per person to rsvp those who perform a 30-minute (or more) shift the next day at the experimental music and massage session (Sun 3/20, btwn 1-4pm) will get their $10 back!
Please be prompt and plan to attend the entire workshop please, no latecomers.
Participants must be 18+ or older, and should bring a snack to get them through the session, and should dress warmly (we can easily massage through most sweaters and sweatshirts).
Adam Overton is a living artist, performer, and art-facilitator from Los Angeles, and has been a certified massage therapist since 2007.

ABOUT
artSpa currently exists as a shifting public & private forum, subtly amplifying the connective tissue(s) of Los Angeles, the art-and-then-somes artistsperformerswritersdancersmusicians[...] + bodyworkerspsychicspsychonautsyoginis[...] weaving energetically among bodies and spirits and minds, as they co-habit the contexts of the aesthetic, the individual, and the relational.
the experimental meditation center of los angeles (emcla) has no center, and presents artist-facilitated experiments in collective contemplation and action.
artSpa and emcla events often feature the insight and guidance of various artists, and are organized by Adam Overton, an artist, composer, performer and massage therapist living in Los Angeles.

from the SPACES announcement:
Camp Cleveland
Machine Project
February 11 - April 01, 2011
Los Angeles-based collective Machine Project is known for their thoughtful and off-kilter approaches to art experiences. Audiences are welcome over the course of the exhibition period to join in Machine Project's "couchbleacher stadium" as the artists explore journeys into psychic mediumship, daily folk and electronic music, human yarn instruments, occasional manifestations of food, vaudevillean Wagner games, broken-instrument-karaoke, and workshops on massage, experimental meditation, and more.
Machine Project operates as a loose confederacy of artists producing shows at locations ranging from the Santa Monica beach to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. In addition they recently developed a year long project exploring how visitors experience the Hammer Museum. Within the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, Machine Project is a non-profit community space investigating art, technology, natural history, science, music, literature, and food. Within the Echo Park storefront as well as in projects held elsewhere they produce events, workshops, and site-specific installations using hands-on engagement to make rarefied knowledge accessible.
Participating artists:
Sculptor Nate Page will be constructing stadium-like seating out of thrift store couches, forming "couchbleachers".
Emily Lacy is a folksinger and a delay-pedal-chant innovator.
Ezra Buchla is a musician performing through voice, viola, and various electronics.
Corey Fogel is a drummer and performance artist who improvises with sound, materials, gestures, and time.
Liz Glynn is a sculptor consistently working with people, found or discarded materials, and historical narratives.
Asher Hartman and Haruko Tanaka are Krystal Krunch, two artists who see and respond to energy in the body, the psyche, personal objects, and architectural spaces.
Adam Overton is a living artist, composer and performer of experimental action and music, and massage therapist based in Los Angeles.
Laura Steenberge is a Musician, Linguist and science charlatan of sorts.
This residency is a joint collaboration between SPACES' R&D program and the SPACES World Artist Program (SWAP) to allow for a richer interaction between audiences and Machine Project.
