Claire Cronin is an artist and songwriter whose work blurs the boundary between psychic and creative processes. Through her performances, she has developed skills in fortune-telling, aura reading, psychometry and mediumship. She will be reading the energy of different spaces in the Hammer and using this material to create songs that speak for the museum as a psychic entity.

Psychic Song-Writing

I spent time exploring the Hammer and reading the energy of each location.  This involves entering a receptive state and inviting any available spirits, emotions, images, or narratives to speak through me.  I used my notes from these sessions to compose five songs that are each tied to a specific place.  The characters, language, and stories that emerged all came to me intuitively.  This collection of songs is meant as a musical mapping of the Hammer, treating the museum as if it were an entity.  The recorded songs can be found on this page, and can be downloaded for visitors who want to use them for an audio tour.

Three Vortexes for the Hammer

A study by Claire Cronin, September 2009

Vortexes, invisible spinning energy centers, can be found all over the world and are proclaimed as sites of healing and transformation. Though the famous vortexes are said to have existed for thousands of years (Sedona, Mt. Shasta, etc) and are associated with a smattering of New Age philosophies, we can create our own vortexes whenever and wherever we want. The process of creating a vortex is two-fold. First, a site must be selected and evaluated for the kind of vortex it needs; and, second, a group of dedicated energizers must come together to will/imagine/vibe the vortex into being.

At the Hammer, I used this method to feel for stuck energy and dreamt up the following solutions. Though this phase was done independently, the creation of each vortex invites public participation.

 1. Daffodil Yellow Vortex

Parking garage, Levels 4 & 5
Duration of Process: 4 or 5 minutes
Profile: The feeling of being four or five floors underground is predictably quiet and still. This sector of the parking garage, however, felt somber and uninviting. As the root of the museum, the designated Hammer parking Levels 4 and 5 impact the aura of the museum as a whole. It would be wise to revitalize the energy of these spaces, so that it might spread up the elevator shaft and bring positive feelings to the rest of the building. The vortex should be  a pale yellow energy field  that reaches across the expanse of the parking level and hovers in the atmosphere. Either Level 4 or Level 5 can be chosen as the creation site, because the resulting force will spread both upwards and downwards. The purpose of this intervention is to bring a spring-like sense of openness, levity, and warmth to the garage.

How-To: A group of energizers gathers on Level 4 or 5 and scatters to different spots. Each person stands in their place, still but relaxed, and begins in unison to emanate a flow of yellow-white energy from their third eyes. To facilitate this process, the energizer can consider the scent of May flowers, morning light coming through a kitchen window, and the Sun as they send out their vibrations. Without sound of movement, the energizers focus on expanding their  yellow-white vibes  as far out from themselves as they can, in all directions. After one-and-a-half-minutes, everyone will stop emanating new energy and suspend the already created vortex in the air. In this way,  the yellow-white light  that they created can continue to pulse and radiate long after they're gone.

2. Dual Clearing and Healing Vortex

"Mustache/Eyebrow" arch, second floor walkway
Duration of Process: 11 minutes
Profile: This part of the walkway on the second floor has collected a lot of energy that needs to be recognized and sorted out. When walking through the space, one encounters a slight tightening of the heart and the sense of being followed. There are several entities or energies that overlap here and are coming into conflict. Without knowing exactly what or why some vibes have gotten stuck, we can perform a gentle yet powerful cleansing and healing at this site. The vortex will be  a rosy pink quartz-colored fog . Before setting it in place, a temporary  white light vortex  needs to be conjured to clear the area.

How-to: A large group of energizers will begin in a tight circle at the center of the walkway. Each person will focus on creating  a powerful white light  in the circle between us, and spin it quickly in a counter-clockwise direction. Once everyone feels that the  white vortex  is strongly established, they will begin to slowly back up away from the center, pulling the energy with them and expanding the vortex. They will spin the  white light  faster and faster, imagining it flushing away any residual energies that are not benefiting the walkway. After they sense that the center is cleared, the energizers will sit down in the places where they are standing. Each person should orient their body to face any direction they are drawn towards, and begin to breathe into their heart. From the chest, they will spread a  pink, loving energy  all around them like a mist. This will be done for two minutes, and then the energizers can get up to leave. Though the  pink fog  will dissolve over time, the area will have been cleansed and loved. Note: The sensing of when to start walking backwards from the vortex will be done intuitively and silently. The group needs to pay attention to each other as well as to the energy they are creating.

3. Tennis Ball Vortex

Elevator lobby, near second floor offices
Duration of Process: 5 minutes
Profile: There is a lot of tension in this small space and a dramatic shift in energy between here and the offices. It is one of the few points of contact between the office building that towers over the Hammer and the Hammer employees. The elevator lobby needs to be calmed down and made more comfortable. To help encourage friendly relations and integrate it into the rest of the building, I propose a  golden web vortex  be created through an energy game.

How-to: This vortex requires two main energizers, but can be aided by as many people as can fit along the room's perimeter. Of the pair, one person will take on the entity of the office building, and one person will be the entity of the Hammer. As they channel these personalities, they will begin to "throw" an energy ball back-and-forth as if they are throwing a real tennis ball. Each time the ball makes an arc across the room, it will leave a  golden strand of connective energy  in the air. After the game has been played for three minutes, the elevator room will be filled with overlapping  strands of golden light . Any additional energizers can help by standing along the sides of the room, without blocking the elevators, and sending  positive thoughts  towards the pair of players. They can hold the palms of their hands towards the central pair and emanate  whatever color  they feel is most needed. The thoughts that they project should be along the lines of "you can do it!," "it's okay!," or "peace is possible!"
